Removing Smelly Chlorine

Why does it smell?

When chlorine is first added to your pool, it has virtually no odor. At this point it is known as hypochlorous acid and it is extremely effective at disinfecting contaminants in the water.

Once it combines with a contaminant such as nitrogen or ammonia it becomes “combined chlorine,” also known as a chloramine.

While hypochlorous acid doesn’t have much of an odor, chloramines have a very distinct odor commonly associated with public pools. As the level of chloramines increase in the pool, the odor gets stronger.

Mark Rober, a former engineer at NASA, conducted an experiment that is very educational, but I would suggest you watch it only if you’re not too squeamish about what may be in the pool.

The good news is that chloramines are easily removed, leaving a pool free of odor. Contact us to discuss how we can help.
